Welcome to the third ESS ILL User Meeting
In 2018, ILL and ESS hosted their first European Users Meeting in Grenoble. This successful meeting provided the opportunity to review the achievements of the user community, present the current status of ILL and ESS and, most importantly, to look forward to the scientific opportunities ahead for neutron science. In 2020 we met remotely and we look forward to a fully in person meeting in Lund in 2022.
The future of neutron scattering is bright, and requires both facilities and the user community to take a proactive and strategic approach to navigating and managing the changing availability of neutron instruments in a holistic way, in order to ensure the sustainability and vitality of this important research technique.
We are proud to announce that the 5th Nordic/Baltic school of neutron scattering will be held at ESS in Lund, arranged by NNSP and SwedNess. This is a preliminary announcement, with a final flyer appearing later this spring.
The dates for the school is 5-16 September 2022, with an optional two-days prequel (3+4 September) to catch up on foundations of Mathematics and Physics for students less familiar with these topics.
The Oxford School on Neutron Scattering is intended for scientists and engineers who are new to the field of neutron scattering. Lectures and tutorials covering the theory and practice of neutron diffraction and spectroscopy are given by international experts. Students will gain a comprehensive grounding in modern techniques and applications at both continuous and pulsed neutron sources and have the opportunity to hear about the latest research being carried out with the technique.

Dear researchers, colleagues and friends, the Bombannes summer school is devoted to the practical «state-of-art» approach to scattering methods, using neutrons, as well as X-ray and light sources - today’s key techniques to study structure and dynamics in systems containing colloids, polymers, surfactants and biological macromolecules. Since 1990 the Bombannes school series introduces, on a fundamental level, the current methodology of static and dynamic scattering techniques and their application to soft matter systems. It provides with a period of 2 years advanced training for young researchers with a working place in European laboratories at post-graduate and post-doctoral level.formation back to real space and structural model calculation of the scattering. It is aimed at young soft matter scientists (using scattering methods in their home laboratory or at large-scale facilities) who have already some background in this domain and want to learn complementary techniques and to exchange their experience.
The 2022 annual conference of the Swedish Physical Society, Fysikdagarna, will be held in Lund with all the plenary events taking place at AF-borgen.
The theme of the meeting this year is Swedish accelerator-based science with plenary contributions on CERN, FAIR, MAX IV, and ESS. The conference will consist of parallel sessions organized by the individual sections (Wednesday afternoon and Friday morning), a plenary day with a conference dinner (Thursday), a plenary poster session (Wednesday evening) and the open annual meeting of the Swedish Physical Society (Friday afternoon, TBC). The program of the plenary day is being finalized during the next weeks.
HALOS Final Conference is a full-day event on the 8th of June. It will give participants a chance to listen to e.g., presentations from HALOS researchers as well as discussions by stakeholders, who will cover the results from HALOS and the future direction for the HALOS region. Everyone who wishes to present results from their HALOS projects in the form of a poster are welcome to do so.
Are you interested in global health research opportunities offered by HALOS? Join the HALOS-EUGLOH Summer School 2022 whose mission is to introduce students and young researchers to exciting opportunities for global health research at the HALOS region large-scale facilities MAX IV, ESS, DESY and European XFEL, as well as EUGLOH large-scale facilities.
What opportunities do the large-scale facilities such as MAXIV and DESY offer for pre-clinical and clinical research?
Our speakers Bodil Ohlsson, Anja Schmidt-Christensen (LU), Lars Dahlin and Karin Tran Lundmark (LU & Skåne University Hospital) will share their experiences and address various aspects.
This year, Swedish Neutron Week will be held at Vildmarkshotellet in Kolmården 16th – 19th of May 2022. The event is jointly arranged by SNSS, SwedNess, and Linköping University, and is open to everyone who is, or wish to be, part of the Swedish neutron scattering community. Participation in the Neutron Week is an excellent opportunity to get a cross-sectional view of current Swedish activities in the field. The purpose of the Neutron Week is to bring together Swedish neutron users, facilities, industry, and funding agencies, to offer an annual event facilitating networking, cooperation and joint actions between the participants.
With dramatic developments of X-ray and neutron sources, cryo-EM, super resolution microscopy, single-molecule microscopy, NMR, and computation, the possibilities for addressing advanced problems in structural biology and molecular cell biology and physiology are on a fast move. It is increasingly important to integrate many sources of data to achieve proper models of dynamic interactions between biomolecules and how they define cell function. The workshop will address these challenges and also cover the individual methods to stimulate critical discourse and forward-looking visions of integral structural biology
