ARCH Workshop: Analytical Research in Cultural Heritage - Heritage Science theme

Welcome to a workshop on Analytical Research in Cultural Heritage!

When: 16-17 October 2024

Where: Workshop room on the 5th floor at LINXS, Scheelevägen 19, Lund, and and MAX IV Laboratory, Fotongatan 2, Lund

Description

Analysis of cultural heritage materials is an innovative topic in the study and conservation of cultural heritage. In the recent years, much research is performed on application of synchrotron radiation techniques in the characterization of cultural and archaeological materials. One of the main requirements imposed by the archaeologists, conservators and scientist in the studies of cultural heritage materials is that the selected techniques must be non-destructive (or at most minimally-destructive). In this aspect, neutron and synchrotron-based techniques can play an important role, being specifically suitable for minimally-destructive analyses.

The aim of this training and education visit and course is introducing various synchrotron and neutron techniques and their applications in the analysis and characterization of different types of materials in the cultural and archaeological objects. Analytical measurements will include 2D imaging of material as well as chemical identification using X-ray absorption spectroscopy.

Participants are encouraged to bring with them small heritage artifacts to be used for Experimental Design exercises. Samples that are feasible may have the opportunity for measurements at the beamline. Please contact the organisers (susan.nehzati@diamond.ac.uk) to check for suitability before the workshop.
