Title: Synchrotron enabled X-ray studies of particles and aqueous system of atmospheric interest
Speaker: Jack Lin, Postdoctoral researcher in the Center for Atmospheric Research, University of Oulu, Finland
Abstract
The complex mixture of particles, water droplets, and ice crystals in the atmosphere results from myriad chemical and physical transformations which have wide ranging impacts on air quality, climate, the hydrological cycle, and human health. In particular, the surfaces of those particles and droplets play important roles in a number of processes including bulk/surface partitioning, mass transport across the particle/droplet interface, and heterogeneous reactions.
X-ray spectroscopy techniques can provide chemically-specific and quantitative information of the measured systems, and the brilliance of the latest generation synchrotron light sources along with new ambient pressure capabilities allow for measurements on samples of atmospherically realistic sizes, concentration, and ambient pressures.
In this seminar, I will present an overview of experiments conducted on particles and model droplet systems by my group at the Center for Atmospheric Research at the University of Oulu.
Bio
Jack Lin received his B.S. in chemical engineering from the California Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. in Earth and atmospheric sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology where he worked with aerosol instrument with a focus on the cloud condensation nuclei counter for airborne sampling. He moved to the University of Oulu to work on applications of spectroscopic methods to model systems for atmospheric aerosol particles and droplets. He is now the group leader of the Synchrotron and Aerosol Experiment group in the Center for Atmospheric Research at the University of Oulu. He is the past recipient of the NASA Graduate Student Research Program fellowship and the Academy of Finland postdoctoral researcher position.
